Thanks for sharing this, Joe. I was hosting the Texas Rangers pregame shows in the early 00's when Buck came through promoting the Negro Leagues in some capacity. I got the chance to do a short interview with him. His joy and love for the game was unmatched, even in his 90's. You know the rule as well as I do: reporters don't ask for autographs. That ball is one of my favorites. 😂❤️
I first discovered Joe when I read The Soul of Baseball, which is still is one of my favorite books. There is something so uplifting about Buck. Wonderful column today!
This story about Buck O'Neil just brightened my day. The same as it did last year and the year before. I hope this remains an October 6 tradition. It reminds me, even when surrounded by bad, to not forget the things that are good. To go find, even create those joyful better things and to nurture them. Lift others. Rest in peace, Buck. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LtE2I6jsung The greatest thing in all my life is loving you.
Buck is and was the very best of us. And thank you, Joe, for capturing his essence in that 45 minutes. The reality is, you prepared years for that moment. And Buck spent a lifetime making it possible. I met him just a handful of times, but every time Buck made me feel like we were lifelong friends.
I don’t think I’ve ever read a better article in my life. Obviously everyone who knew Buck was a better person for knowing him. I now feel like a better person for having read about his life. Thank you.
Anyone that has ever met Buck, would never be able to LOVE That Treasure of A Gentleman ENOUGH!! Blessed to have met Him, during The HOF Induction Day (with my Son) of Our Beloved Friend Gary Carter. Both Fine Gents are SO sorely missed!!!

This was a beautiful tribute to one of my heroes. Thanks, Joe.
One of your best, Joe, and a fitting tribute to a special human being.
"I told him, 'that's my son.'"
Way to go, Joe. Well done.
Man, my allergies are acting up right now…..
😭😭😭
I need a NSFW label on these so I’ll know I’m going to end up crying in the office. Always love your pieces on Buck, an incomparable human being.

Because I often have problems navigating the archives of this site, I thought others may too. So here is a link to the original obituary. https://www.joeposnanski.com/p/the-full-life-of-buck-oneil
