Um, so I’m laughing and cringing at the thought of putting Jim Thorpe on the Sports Mount Rushmore, even as an honoring ceremony and metaphor. By and large, Natives hate Mt. Rushmore, especially the tribes of South Dakota. Also, Thorpe’s life after athletic fame was tragic. He died depressed and alcoholic of a heart attack in a trailer house in California. I think, based on his incredible sports accomplishments and the epic tragedy of the racism and classism that he suffered, that Thorpe deserves his own mountain. And, oh, just so you know. I’m a Spokane Indian who grew up on the Spokane Indian Reservation in Eastern Washington State.
