OK, so as we wind down 2022, I asked JoeBlogs editor Larry — please offer some season greetings to Larry in the comments — to choose some of his favorite JoeBlogs reads from this year.
I read all of them eagerly - thank you, Joe. I only became a paid subscriber this year (I also subscribed to Tommy Tomlinson’s SubStack), and only regret not doing it sooner. Happy New Year to you, your family, and all the subscribers and posters who make this such a cool and interesting place.
Great stuff! Thanks for sharing. Happy New Year to you & family! And to Larry, a tip of cap. Joe’s published content is way past the words, ‘abundant’, ‘copious’ or ‘voluminous’. Can’t imagine scale of pile of clippings next to Larry’s desk (online trash box). Given the season, the image of a diligent Bob Cratchit ‘moonlighting’ at Fezziwig’s comes to mind.
Thanks so much to all you brilliant readers for the holiday wishes and for being loyal supporters of JoeBlogs! Our old colleague Mark Mravic, who worked with Grant Wahl on his Substack and was his longtime soccer sidekick at SI, always said he wasn’t really Grant’s editor as much as his “suggester,” and I think that pretty much describes my work here: learning every day, having a lot of fun and trying to read as fast as Joe writes :-) And now I will get back to watching more Ryan George videos. Thanks, Joe!
My great-uncle Larry "Lawrence" Coles always pushed me, teenage and 20-something brat punk rocker, to consider a second act in life when I was ready, and always encouraged me to think about public service and even law school. I think about him a lot as I, 42 years old, enter my third semester* of college with plans to continue for years to come. In other words: people named Larry start off a little bit ahead, in my book.
*not counting the two semesters from when I was 19 that I didn't give a shit about and from which a paltry few credits were miraculously salvageable for my current run
Season's Greetings, Larry!
And as for the actual content here, I feel like somehow I missed a few of these! Wacky. That said, I don't hardly care about tennis in the real world, but I absolutely love Posnanski tennis pieces. The joy he (you?) feels (feel?) when they are being written is evident in the final product and it's glorious. Thank you and Happy New Year to all y'all!
ahh yes, what a year it was, in sports- and in all the rest of life, for each and every one of us! as surely we all did, i lost several good friends this year- some famous (Gilbert Godfried), and several only well-known in their respective fields (esp comedy), more than a few younger than i... Joe, i wish you and your family & friends- and Larry- and all who read your wonderful writing- all the best; may next year be the best of your life so far! my album is coming out soon, and am quite excited about that (including a 20th anniv remake of my international radio hit that i've never received 1 cent of royalties for! this time, i'll finally get paid!!!) since you like watching youtube vids and extolling new artists such as Laney, maybe you might take a few minutes and behold some of my artistry?
Speaking of Chess Joe, on your advice from your Father's day column, I bought ChessUp for my 12 year old son for Christmas. He is loving it!!!! I hope your Dad is still loving it too. Thank you. And Happy New Year.
And Happy New Year to Larry as well. Sorry, my 50 something year old brain had meant to do that at the beginning of your post and had forgot by the end. Thankfully some of my fellow readers have brains that work better than mine and reminded me in their comments.
