The Wrecking Crew is such a great documentary, and also a great example of how crowdfunding can make or break a project. Tommy Tedesco's son, Denny, tried for years and years to get it made, and what kept holding it up was clearing all the musical rights. In the end, Kickstarter was the way to go. I have a copy of the DVD sitting on my shelf!
oh I love how you wove that Glen Campbell into all the magic, that was magical Joe. I used to to magic for kids birthday parties. Loved it until the kids I performed for were like 8 years old and all I heard was, "I know how you did that". But I do still have a favorite trick I perform. Maybe if we ever get to meet in Charlotte I'll bring it to show you.
Can confirm that if you have any interest in 60s-70s pop music, "The Wrecking Crew" is a great doc. Kind of a West Coast version of the fabulous "Standing In the Shadows of Motown."
Setting aside I am missing something on why the Monopoly money was somehow magical I was managing a greasy spoon in college and had a doofus do this exact thing to be funny and then when I called the cops (after an extended request for legit payment) when the cops arrived he finally did pay and said I couldn’t take a joke. The cops didn’t find him funny either and told him better he take his sense of humor somewhere else. When he left he flipped off all of us yelling “humorless f$cks”. So sorry Joe. Didn’t get the magic here. I am sure it’s a great story for others.
I'm assuming the magician had set it up in advance with the server, unbeknownst to his dinner guests, who all made the assumption that the cops would be called etc... and then were tickled pink to have their expectations shattered?
Oh, I hope you bought a Hawaiian shirt, too! And not one of the cheap tourist knock-offs; spend the bucks to get a real silk one with a beautiful image. Well worth it.
My favorite Glen Campbell / William Tell clip is the acoustic version from Central Park in NY, 1974.
As a kid growing up debating with others about Clapton vs Van Halen vs Hendrix etc ... hearing Campbell or Roy Clark or Chet Atkins many years later was a revelation.
But as long as we are talking Hawaii ... how about a little ukulele music from the great and powerful Iz.

That must have been an amazing show. Was it part of the Schaefer in the Park series? I went to several of them in '73 and '74.
