You have a best friend that is always there for you when you’re a kid, and you stay close through high school and college, but eventually you drift apart as you grow. You don’t talk for ten years. But it still hurts when he dies.

I feel like Richard Dreyfus at the end of Stand by Me. “I hadn’t seen him in ten years but I’ll miss him forever. I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, does anyone?”

SI. RIP.

When I was 8 years old my parents got me a subscription to Sports Illustrated, and the first issue I received had Tony Rice on the cover, which turned me into a Notre Dame fan for the next 20 years.

In the May 25, 2015 issue (with Steph Curry on the cover) Joe Sheehan wrote a piece about tremendous pitching performances, and in the final paragraph he wrote, "Just as a shutout on 99 pitches or fewer has become known as a 'Maddux,' (a term coined by writer Jason Lukehart)..."

I was no longer a subscriber, but as soon as I heard I was my name was there, I ran out the door to find a copy, and when I did, I was like the guys in That Thing You Do, losing their minds when they heard their song on the radio. Seeing my name in Sports Illustrated was such a thrill.
