As an A's fan, and in particular a Matt Olson fan, I can tell you that the contract he just signed as a double gut punch. I know the answer to these questions, but you have to ask, did the A's even try to sign Olson? I know John Fisher isn't in the business of handing out 8 year contracts, but did anyone say hey Matt, how about 2 years $30 million with an option for a third year at like $20 million? It is truly heartbreaking, although I've come to know this heartbreak well as an Oakland fan.

Also, as for Olson jerseys in closets, there are a lot of those here in the Bay Area. Matt is extremely popular here. Plus, ironically, or maybe not ironically because it's Oakland, a perk for renewing one's season tickets this year was a Matt Olson jersey. I did not renew because they jacked up the price for my tickets 60% while simultaneously stripping off most of the benefits. I'm only a 20+ year season ticket holder, but I guess that doesn't factor in.

Finally, as for kids loving Freddie Freeman, they will love Matt Olson. He's a great player and super nice human being. If I could post pictures here I would show you one of him and my daughter, Katie.

In 2019, back when A's tickets had perks, one of them was you could have an on field experience. We chose delivering the lineup card before the game. We met down on the field on that sunny April afternoon, and Matt Olson was assigned to attend the pre-game meeting at home plate with Katie. Katie was 7 at the time. Matt, who is at least 6'5" came out and squatted down to greet her and chat with her for a moment before they walked to home plate. They then walked towards the plate together, and Katie took his hand for the walk. It was a special moment and turned her into a huge fan of his. She was devastated when she heard he'd been traded.

The kids and fans in Atlanta will love him. They won't forget Freddie, they will just count their blessings that they went from a great player like Freeman to a great player like Olson. Just like the Packers going from Favre to Rodgers, or the Yankees from DiMaggio to Mantle.

As an Oakland fan, I assume someone will play first base this season.

Braves fan here and I totally disagree with this take. Someone should "publicly and ferociously tear apart the Braves"? For what? Being World Series Champs and doing their best to repeat? I admire the hell out of Freeman and am sad to see him go, but the Braves GM has proven he can build a winning team and I thought that was the name of the game. Are the Braves supposed to keep all of the fans favorite players if that means a mediocre on field product? Also, who knows how hard the Braves did or did not try to keep Freeman. The rumor in Atlanta was a 5 year $140-145m offer. Maybe that isn't market value, but it isn't chump change either.
