As baseball fans, I think we (often) believe it matters. Not sure, Joe, how much you look at the comments--or if other readers might find this interesting--but I've thought about numbers and baseball some. To me we use the numbers to mark time and they form the bonds that link baseball, memory, and community. Here is a link to the text (and images) of a lecture I gave on the subject, using the Baseball Hall of Fame's exhibit "One for the Books."
