I've heard about that Emanski ad for years -- often from Joe and his Poscast sidekick. Since Joe embedded the video in this post, I went ahead and watched. So I have now seen the ad one more time than Fred McGriff has. Thanks, Joe.
You could see some odd things happen with pitcher wins the way they are awarded and if openers become even more common. you could see a guy be the second pitcher in on a good team 70 times a year where the opener cant get a win by rule.
I am always shocked at how little Eric Davis is remembered, even by real fans. You couldn’t watch Sports Center or the Sports Reporters without hearing a gushing remark or two about his talent. To this day, I think he had the quickest bat I ever saw.
He had only a couple years of real greatness. If you weren't a big fan in 1986-88, you might not think he was that big of a deal. I was a big fan then, and a big fan of the Reds, and clearly remember Davis being electrifying. I looked forward to his games, collected his baseball cards, etc.
My favorite McGriff memory is from the '94 All-Star Game when his 2-run home run off Lee Smith tied the game in the bottom of the 9th. Tony Gwynn and Moises Alou won the game in the 10th, ending a long NL losing streak, but McGriff's homer (which gives him a total of 504 in mlb competition) made it possible. He'd be a fine addition to Cooperstown.

The Orioles should sign McGriff now. At Camden in this heat with that ball he’d have 7 HRs in 3 weeks. Can he be worse than Davis?

I gotta say that passion and flair are not words that come to mind when thinking about Fred McGriff. :)
