I really do think Bill Veeck is the best baseball owner of all time. He was decades ahead of his time in terms of team management and labor relationship, and is probably the only owner to realize that happy players are more productive. Of course his showmanship tends to obscure everything else and I don’t really think he ever got the credit he deserves.

That is a fun rabbit hole. The Bryson connection is cool, too. He's also one of my favorite writers, though one of his best lines is not his, but his dads, which he says he found in a collection of the best sport writing from sometime in the 1940s or 50s. (It might have been in "Thunderbolt Kid" but I could be wrong, since I've read all his stuff over the years and it blends together sometimes.)

Apparently some football coach named Burns, who had a penchant for pacing the sidelines during games, was helpless to keep his porous defense from allowing the opposition to score and thereby blow his team's lead and of course the game. His dad's comment was, of course,

"The defense fiddled while Burns roamed."
