I read this moving piece when you published it, and am now reaching out to note that I and several other of Pellom's colleagues at the Rose Library at Emory University just finished a remembrance video that tracks his life and career across the many different forms it took. The film will premiere next week as part of the Decatur Book Festival. It will be followed by a panel discussion with three important figures in Pellom's life. The event is free, you just need to register. I hope this is okay to post here. I would appreciate it if you would consider posting it to your social media, as you would likely reach a lot of people who knew him. We have also reached out to the NFL and the Chiefs. Bonus: we obtained some footage of Pellom playing for OSU and his college graduation photo. Here's the link: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/ajc-dbf-2020-the-life-and-work-of-dr-pellom-mcdaniels My best.
So sorry for your loss. After reading your tribute, I felt like I had lost a friend too. What an incredible man. I think our lives are measured by the impact we have on others. He will long be remembered.
Thank you, Joe. So sad that Pellom is gone. Pellom, the Beaver! I always pulled for OSU football players who made the pros, and I was happy when he joined the Chiefs because I am a Chiefs' fan. I was an impressionable 4th-grader in Corvallis when Terry Baker won the Heisman Trophy in 1962. My father was earning his Master's at OSU, so I bled Orange & Black into adulthood. Thanks to you, I now know of Pellom's considerable contributions to this world.
I made the mistake of googling Pellom McDaniels as I started reading. So I knew the ending.
But thank you for sharing your part of Pellom's story and reminding us how we got there. Indeed, if life is about the journey and not the destination that awaits us all, Pellom had a remarkable journey.
May Pellom McDaniel III memory always be for a blessing.
Joe this is Cedric formerly of the Chiefs PR dept. if you receive an address for condolences please post. I will let others know. His family deserves to know how much KC loved him. Thanks for the tribute.
Thank you Joe. Grateful for your incredible abilities. Not many who can take the gray threads of life, find the color, and weave a coat his brothers want to share.
Almost can’t beat “admiration” as a quality other quality people think you have. Even though I saw the ending to this post almost at the beginning, it hit me hard.
Sincere condolences for your loss. And thank you for this compelling reminder of what is important. I have some things to do this morning that I have been putting off.
Wonderful piece, Joe, as was your piece about your grandmother (we had the same rule with our "grandmother" Lol). Thanks for the words during these depressing times (my oldest daughter is also a senior), reading you is always a light no matter who dark the world or the subject matter is. Thank you.
