Wow! Relative to baseball, your daughter and mine (Katie, as you know - they should totally meet), sound exactly the same, only mine is 8, so she is at the stage where she likes eating and reading a book or playing with her doll at the game, occasionally looking up, or rooting for a particular player.

I had tears in my eyes after reading this. Led a similar path but in tv sports reporting. Raised 2 kids, now in their 40s...4 grandkids! Gone a lot, working nights & weekends. Took a toll on the marriage but a bond thru the passion of sports with family has never wavered. Awesome stuff Joe!

My Elizabeth is 16, and I have all the feels.

Wow. You have nothing but links to Athletic articles for quite awhile, then you drop this gem on us.

There is nothing quite like watching someone you care about discover the wonder in something and being the person they share it with. Enjoy every moment.

I know that Elizabeth leaving for college is a transition that you, and all parents, approach with many mixed feelings. Having come out on the other side of that transition, I can assure you that wonder will still be part of your relationship, just in different ways. And, if you are lucky, you will someday discover a whole new kind of wonder and joy called grandparenthood.

So Joe. I’m wondering what the experience was last year when you two watched the Chiefs beat the Browns? And what do you anticipate your experience would be if Patrick and Baker met in the playoffs one of these days? Would you feel any conflict at a joyful Brown’s play?

This is amazing. I don’t even watch the NFL anymore, but I love the description of your daughter’s wonder. I’ve seen the same in my daughters, and it’s glorious. Thanks for putting it into words.

How you not win all the writing awards, each year, I'll never know. Just wonderful.
