Otto Graham... I'd argue that he created the modern quarterback position.

And what exactly did he do? Ten professional football seasons, ten championship game appearances, seven pro championships.

Oh, the AAFC shouldn't count because it wasn't the NFL, you say? On the heels of four straight AAFC titles, when Otto Graham and his Cleveland Browns joined the NFL in 1950, they proceeded to go to the NFL title game six straight seasons, winning three NFL titles.

Just for good measure... what did Otto Graham do in his spare time after returning from WWII while waiting for the inaugural AAFC season to kick off in 1946? He played a year of pro basketball in the country's premier National Basketball League in 1945-46, where he was an integral part of the starting five for the Rochester Royals .

And he went to the championship finals.

And won the NBL league title!

I know we're all too young to have seen him play, but let's take a moment to fully appreciate the magnificence of Otto Graham.

There are about 18 or 20 qualified starting quarterbacks in the NFL, and there are 32 teams. The remaining teams fall into the whirlpool of cycling in and out of quarterbacks every couple of years, an abyss that is so very difficult to crawl out of. For some teams it takes years and years to finally find the one, and some teams are still searching. Just ask the Browns... Or the Titans... or the Colts... or the Vikings... or the Jets... or the Jaguars... or the Bears... or any one of the many teams that have gone years and years before finally finding a quarterback capable of leading a legitimate playoff contender. Some teams are still looking and trying. The Bills spent an entire generation after Jim Kelly before finally landing Josh Allen. (Kelly Holcomb, Alex Van Pelt, J.P. Losman, Trent Edwards, E.J. Manuel, Kyle Orton anybody?)

If you follow the CFL and its 18-game schedule, you know that any successful team must have two quality quarterbacks because with that long season there are going to be times you're going to need to lean on your number two guy. CFL teams cannot expect to rely on their primary starting QB to play the whole game for 18 games. They need a backup capable of more than the occasional fourth quarter mop-up duty appearances in blowouts.

In the NFL however, there aren't enough legitimate starters to stock even the current 32 teams. There are probably a dozen QBs at any given time who should never be starting in the NFL.

This in and of itself is an argument against the NFL and their inevitable expansion into an 18-game schedule. But that won't stop them.
