Sixty-two days until pitchers and catchers … and here’s your daily splash of joy.

Why do you love baseball?

Brilliant Reader Bob: “I was desperate for a male role model. Enter Grandpa… a diehard White Sox fan, and a man who could weave tales and stories of seeing Ruth, Cobb, and Wagner, among others.”

Brilliant Reader Brian: “I love how the home team’s fans perfunctorily boo… whenever the visiting pitcher attempts to pick off a runner at first base.”

Brilliant Reader Daniel: “Mickey Mantle laying down a drag bunt and running like the wind to beat it out — although it was totally insane for the Mick to ever bunt.”

As promised, here is the prom photograph of my friend and tennis doubles partner, Maddy.

Her date? Do you recognize him?

That’s Colorado Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer.

There’s so much to love about this photo — there’s a whole story to be told about the sabertooth tiger skull over Warren’s left shoulder — but the main point is that we are now running a very pro-Rockies newsletter here at JoeBlogs.

If you would like to send in the reason why you love baseball, we’d love to hear it. And in that spirit, we’re also now collecting photos and artwork too — old snapshots, ballpark scenes, favorite scorecards, kids’ drawings, ticket stubs, whatever captures the joy of the game for you. Some people are sending song lyrics. Some are sending poems. It’s utterly wonderful. Just send along your baseball joy to [email protected].

Lots and lots of requests from Brilliant Readers for me to list off the 50 players I would vote into the Hall of Fame ahead of Jeff Kent. I’m now planning on doing it for Friday’s Clubhouse.

For the holidays, you can give a gift membership to The Clubhouse (or give one to yourself) for $10 off the regular price!
