Marty, Elvis and a Piece of My Hide
Marty Brennaman called his last game on Thursday. It’s always poignant when a longtime local baseball announcer retires; they are so much a part of our lives. Marty provided the narration to a million Cincinnati childhoods. A lot has been written about his amazing career; I just told three stories, one from the beginning of his career, one from the weirdness apex of his career, and one where he took a piece of my hide.
Joe, I got totally confused by your shifting AND shifting of "platforms" the calendar year - Patreon, whatever, mumbo, jumbo, and now TheAthletic, NONE of which I'd ever heard of, or would have occasion to go on,but for your own enjoyable writing.
Just for one thing, I had no idea I could make the Latest change, the one to The Athletic, for no extra charge . - or at a discount - or in ANY way other than paying $35.99 UP FRONT for the entire year, NEVER ever seeing even a monthly payment option with them - much less a very short free trial option. At 77 years of age, and kinda low-tech, I cannot keep track of things as well as just a couple of years ago - and I CANNOT be involved in anything where there's more and more to keep track of. Yesterday, I spent half an hour online getting to where I could cancel my subscription to the Athletic - so that it wouldn't keep hitting my Amex for the rest of my life - men in my family live well into their 90s, like my dad and my dad's dad. While I am locked in for twelve months, after sept 21, 2020, I will NOT be a subscriber to the Athletic - unless, of course, i take action to opt in again, in 2020.
By the way, my favorite project of yours is your baseball 100 (NOT the shaddow-ball material,). I hope you can work your way down to your #1, and post it all, by Sept. 19, 2020.
Joe, I loved the reference to the Willy Wonka contract. That scene is incredible in so many ways, with Gene Wilder pulling out the (half) magnifying glass to read the faux legalese jibberish written on the (half) contract.
