Nowell reminds me a great deal of another KState player who was a great passer - her #5 jersey hangs at Bramlage today. You wrote some great words when she played also! I enjoy your writing very much!
In many things in life, generalists are better than specialists. Never surrender to only one genre.
Sports specialists emerged because each professional sport wants us to believe that it is a year round endeavor. The business may be year round; the games are not. I personally don't need to buy into 365 days of any sport. Even baseball, which remains my main passion.
I was a second Lieutenant stationed in El Paso in 1965. I was very lonely, but a good friend was the sporsts reporter for the base newspaper and got us into games.. Texas Western was there, We disparagingly called it Teenie Weenie. It later became UTEP, and that year they won the championship. It is a March Magic Memory in my life.
I'm about your age and followed a similar arc. I was at that 2011 NCAA Final in Houston. It was horrible. UConn beat Butler 53-41, a far cry from 1987 when I saw the Keith Smart game in New Orleans. It is just recently that the game has come back to resembling what it was back in the 80s and 90s. I think the transfer portal and NIL deals have made a difference. I live in Northwest Arkansas now and it is much easier to follow along when you live in a college dominated area. Houston is all about the pro teams, even though they have one of the best college teams in town.
Thanks for reminding me of this game. I’ve drifted from college hoops regular season also. Happened on the KSU V KU game channel surfing and was mesmerized.
Joe, how did you find Margo? And can she tell you about the birthplace of K-State basketball, Ahearn Fieldhouse? Fifty - nine years ago the ‘Cats played UCLA in the final four in Kansas City. The Bruins became legends and the Wildcats are still trying to return to the final weekend. Kansas gets all the news every year...I hope Kansas State is the one focused on this time. EMAW
Obviously I’m late to reading this piece, but just wanted to say this was one of my favorite pieces I’ve read in while. Thanks Joe
Wally Szczerbiak!
Brilliant writing. Thank you, Joe.
Great read Joe,
Have you seen this breakdown of the play?

Thanks for that. Marvelous break down of the play!
The only way this blog could get better is if college basketball was discussed more :)

During the UK game my friend texted: it’s always the 5’8” guy that kills you, but usually he’s on your team.
Perfectly written. What a talent!

Another great article. Such a pleasure to read. I’m glad you are back with college hoops. It’s a great game.
I follow sports for only one reason
To feel joy
That game delivered

That sneaky ally-oop was the basketball version of baseball’s hidden ball trick!

Joe...If you liked that alley oop dunk, you should watch the alley oop dunk which was the game winner vs. KU this year.

Also, the pair (Nowell and Johnson) had another alley oop dunk in the final seconds of the OSU game this year to go up by 5.

Enjoy!

Now, March Madness baby!
Wimp Sanderson? Latrell Sprewell? C'mon, Joe. 😂
