1) Note to self: Are you really going to try to do this 100 random thoughts thing again? Is this going to be a weekly thing? The last two just about broke you.
2) Note back to self: Yes, but I’m going to try to get a few cheap ones right at the top by writing notes to and from self.
3) Note to self: Smart.
4) Note back to self: Thanks!
5) OK, so I guess Shohei Ohtani is in the “Let’s just hit a home run every single day” portion of his magical mystery tour. He’s now homered in each of his last five games, and the question remains, as it has for the last five years: How can anyone be this good at baseball?
6) Trivia question: Who has the best record in baseball?
7) Trivial answer: That’s right, it’s the Milwaukee Brewers and, honestly, there’s no way in the world you got that one right unless you are closely related to Jim Gantner. I don’t mean third cousin twice removed. No, unless you are a first cousin or closer to Jim Gantner, you were not aware that the Milwaukee Brewers have the best record in baseball.
8) Holy cow, the Brewers are a marvel. Their best everyday player appears to be either Brice Turang or Sal Frelick, depending on which version of WAR you prefer. Their best pitcher is Freddy Peralta. Their closer is 31-year-old Trevor Megill. They have an outstanding reliever named Abner Uribe. What even is this team?
9) Yes, Abner. There has not been an Abner in the big leagues since Abner Dalrymple in 1891, unless you count Shawn Abner, which you probably should. …. You should know that Abner Dalrymple was “gentlemanly in manner and temperate with alcohol,” according to the papers.
10) Seriously, how are the Brewers doing it? Well, they have a whole bunch of average to slightly above average hitters in their lineup, and they’re getting top-notch starting pitching from pretty much anyone they throw out there. The Brewers have some sort of super-secret trick for developing starting pitchers that every other team in baseball would just kill to get their hands on.
11) Staying in the NL Central: It’s got to be rough on the North Side of Chicago this morning. Everything is going right for the Cubs. Everything. Pete Crow Armstrong is an MVP frontrunner, and NOBODY ON EARTH saw that coming. Kyle Tucker is doing his Kyle Tucker thing of being one of the ten best players on earth while nobody notices. Seiya Suzuki is boppin. Michael Busch is boppin. Matthew Boyd and Shota Imanaga are both putting up Cy Young numbers. Daniel Palencia is closing doors. It simply could not be going any better. AND THE STINKIN’ BREWERS JUST TOOK OVER FIRST PLACE!
12) Brilliant Reader Dan asks me to project the career home run totals for: Giancarlo Stanton, Mike Trout, Freddie Freeman, Manny Machado, Aaron Judge, Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber. OK! Here’s the full chart — here goes nothing.
