Sixty-eight days until pitchers and catchers … and here’s your daily splash of joy.

Why do you love baseball?

Brilliant Reader Ben: “Calling my grandma to talk about a big win… or a big loss… or really after just any game, since she watches them all.”

Brilliant Reader Matthew: “Tracking and catching a fly ball — the judgment, the running, and the satisfaction of the ball dropping harmlessly into the glove.”

Brilliant Reader Steve: “I love baseball because, as Bill Veeck once said, ‘This is a game to be savored, not gulped. There's time to discuss everything between pitches or between innings.’ As frenetic and excited as we may become during a game, there is always that lull between pitches allowing us to gather our thoughts, say our silent prayers, or scream our lungs out.”

Brilliant Reader Lou: “I found this in a 1941 ‘Who's Who in Major Leagues Sports’ booklet about ‘Fanettes' and their contribution to baseball:”

Joe: Margo and our oldest, Elizabeth, were particularly blown away by the sentence: “Fanettes are no longer groping babies in the wood baseballistcally speaking.” It took quite a while to explain that in this case, “groping” is an adjective, not a verb.

If you would like to send in the reason why you love baseball, we’d love to hear it. And in that spirit, we’re also now collecting photos and artwork too — old snapshots, ballpark scenes, favorite scorecards, kids’ drawings, ticket stubs, whatever captures the joy of the game for you. Some people are sending song lyrics. Some are sending poems. It’s utterly wonderful. Just send along your baseball joy to [email protected].

Kathleen’s Korner

  • First, I want to thank BR Lou. I did thoroughly enjoy your inclusion of the Fanettes booklet.

  • Sports Business Journal took a look at all the MLB giveaways and promotions this year, which included 380,000 bobbleheads!

  • It was Bo Jackson’s birthday the other day and I can never resist a collection of Bo highlights. Luckily, the MLB social accounts had me covered.

  • Over on Bluesky, John Foley is photoshopping a Phillies player into different television and movie scenes until the start of the MLB season. As he said, AI is killing the “noble craft of amateur Photoshop,” but this is a hidden gem.

  • Since I’m here, I’ll also make one last push for our Brilliant Reader Hall of Fame Ballot in case Joe inspired you with his PosCast Live yesterday.
