I was really box score chasing last night, and it had nothing to do with whether the Braves or Dodgers won.

(Screw 'em both, right?)

But the Betts vs. Acuna (and maybe Freeman too) angle was just too much to resist. And, man, did they deliver!

We had a fun thread in the comments earlier this week that somehow (d)evolved into how incredible Albert Belle's overlooked 1998 was. Because of Sosa/McGwire, his own slow start, the ChiSox being only ok, etc.

He may have even outdone Mookie in July of that year: 405/455/941. 24 R/32 RBI. 16 (!!) homers, plus 6 doubles. TWENTY-TWO XBHs.

How do you slug 900+? I guess that's how.

I'm so glad you picked this up; I figured you'd have to. I liked it so much that I took a screenshot of the Hey Bill before it disappeared.

One thought I had, since it seems absurd to literally have one number one player, without another one possible for like 75 more years, was that you could maybe switch from 1 in 3 to 1 in 2 (or vice versa) once you reach a certain level. So Level 1 is all 20k (actually 21,800 says FanGraphs), Level 2 is the 10k out of those who got more than a cup of coffee, Level 3 is the 5k who were regulars for at least a bit (about 2000 PAs or 500 IP as it turns out; classic Remember Some Guys territory).

If you switch from 1/2 to 1/3 after Level 4, you get 900 in Level 5, which I think is a good number for Hall of Pretty Good, then 300 at Level 6, which is (about) the current Hall of Fame. Level 10 ends up with 4 guys, which matches up with the (often dumb, be honest) Mt Rushmore concept.
