I don't remember the details of the meeting Joe mentions in his piece today but I do recall reading some of his bonus columns, being curious, impressed and probably saying something like: "I appreciate your enthusiasm, see some good things in your work, we're not going to fire you, and, please, get the scores and the names right in the agate."

Joe and I talked often about writing and, always, those talks were the best part of my day. I'm terrible at predictions, simply awful, but I did tell Observer Editor Rich Oppel then, when he asked me who the Posnanski kid was, that one day he'd be one of the five best sports columnists in the country. Congratulations for two years, for 35-plus years and for the new book. I remain curious.

I've been reading sports my entire life, and it NEVER occurred to me that some stringer at 11:30 p.m. ET was the person abbreviating the box score names I would see in the morning on the West Coast. Thank you for doing that job. And, you know, the other stuff, too.
