** JoeBlogs Trivia **

It’s likely that some of Joe’s new readers do not know Joe well enough to fully appreciate his many idiosyncratic references. This quiz might help.

1. Who is Joe’s favourite baseball player?

(A) Zack Greinke

(B) Joey Votto

(C) Mookie Betts

(D) Derek Jeter

(E) Duane Kuiper

ANSWER: This was an easy one. Nevertheless, kudos if you chose (E). If you chose (D) - this must be your first day here. A bonus point if you wrote in: Buck O’Neil.

2. What is the name of Joe’s long-running podcast with Michael Schur?

(A) The Joe Posnanski Experience

(B) The Podcast About Nothing

(C) My Dinner with Mose

(D) Pos and Recreation

(E) The Poscast

ANSWER: The correct answer, sadly, is (E).

3. On January 17, 2020, in the midst of writing the internet version of The Baseball 100, Joe posted a piece on Sandy Koufax whereby he ranked the sainted Koufax as the 70th greatest baseball player of all time - 70th being 29 spots ahead of Mike Mussina and 13 ahead of Phil Neikro and (get this) one spot ahead of Bert Blyleven. How was this ranking received by Joe’s readership, as may be inferred from the comments posted at the time?

(A) The ranking was generally well-received.

(B) Fans of Koufax and clear thinking politely disagreed.

(C) There were shitstorms of exclamation marks that were often preceded, and sometimes followed, by horrific insults.

(D) Not well. Not well at all.

(E) (A) and (B).

(F) (C) and (D).

ANSWER: The correct answer is (F). I mean, he posted it on the internet. Anyway, it was a four-year-old’s tea party compared with what happened two days later when Gaylord Perry came in at #68.

4. For how many newspapers, magazines and web sites, combined, did Joe write prior to committing full time to his current Substack blog, JoeBlogs?

(A) 4

(B) 7

(C) 12

(D) 13 to 30

(E) all of them

ANSWER: After several tries, we were unable to complete an accurate count. It was like trying to paint the Golden Gate Bridge. We will accept (D) or (E).

5. Who is Joe’s favourite football player?

(A) Brian Sipe

(B) Priest Holmes

(C) Garo Yapremien

(D) Patrick Mahomes

(E) John Elway’s debilitating hand disorder

ANSWER: This is a tossup between (B) (Joe’s erstwhile chess opponent, Priest Holmes) and (E).

6. In 2012, due in part to the insight offered by the relatively new baseball statistic, WAR, Joe generated enormous numbers of words regarding which topic?

(A) The young Mike Trout’s Mantle-like brilliance.

(B) The many many ways in which Jack Morris was no Bert Blyleven.

(C) The compelling and ultimately triumphant pursuit, by the Kansas City Royals’ returning hero, Yuniesky Betancourt, of a career BWAR of precisely zero.

(D) All of the above.

ANSWER: The correct answer is (D). (Those were good times.)

Regarding romanticizing baseball: I feel that I do the same thing about church.

I find myself at a church service for whatever reason every couple of years, and when I do, I silently criticize. Why aren't people more dressed up? What's with this contemporary music -- what was wrong with the classic hymns? Why is the pastor talking about money and relationship problems instead of discoursing on theology?

Because when *I* go to a church service, I want it to feel like a hallowed special occasion. The people who actually go every week want to dress comfortably, hear music they like, and a message they understand.

So, I get where your friend is coming from, but MLB would be as misguided to listen to someone like that as any church would be to listen to someone like me.
