I felt like they could have combined the important parts of the first nine episodes into two episodes and then had a lot better final season. Just so much random things that just didn’t pay off at all. What they did with Nate was weird and didn’t really make sense with the character they had written to that point. It was a solid concept, just executed poorly. Anyways, series overall was great and they really finished the season well. Was definitely worth riding it out.
Congrats to Katie! confession: although i didn't drop out of high school, i also never officially graduated- has it- or not going to college- hurt me? Nah, i don't need any certificates to be a lifelong musician who has had an international radio hit (since 2002, at least 32 countries that i know of for sure) even if i've never been paid ANY of the royalties for said airplay (long story)...
I think I agree with all your Ted Lasso points but one: I have no problem with the title of Trent’s book. I feel like it works. Overall season 3 had many issues, but I loved the ending. But I didn’t get anything about the Nate plot
There is literally no better time to write something than while waiting for a graduation. Congrats to Katie and all the grads, but in my experience, there is nothing more boring in life than attending a graduation. Unless your loved one is giving a speech, it is hours of your time for a 10 second payoff.
My Wife used to rip on me for not attending graduations, but unless it is your own child (or a spouse or SO in college or something) it is not worth it. I will send a nice gift, and maybe a card with some unsolicited life advice or something, but don't expect me to watch.
OK, so a Ted Lasso comment here. I am absolutely not judging Joe or Katie‘s comments and opinions about season 3 here, each to his own. But it reminds me of what I call GOTS – Game of Thrones syndrome. One of the real beauties of GOT was that it seemed every episode had a twist you absolutely did not see coming. And then after the long wait when the final season finally dropped, 5 million people every week said “No, that’s not right!!” The public’s response to the seasons of Ted Lasso feels exactly the same. There were certainly issues in episodes this season that I felt did not fit into the narrative, but I enjoyed the twists and turns anyway. Like I said, each to his or her own....
So, quick question, anyone: I’ve only watched the first three episodes of season three of “Ted Lasso.” I immediately skipped over Joe’s daughter’s ranking of the characters. Can I go back and read it, or are there any spoilers? (I was saving season three to watch as I recover from neck surgery).
Much appreciated, Tom. I can’t say I recommend getting your throat cut to have bone spurs removed from your cervical spine, but in my case, it does seem to have helped. And, I’ve heard murmurs about the third season not being as good as the first two. I didn’t expect to fall in love with this show, and I think I will probably still love the episodes I haven’t seen yet, sort of that whole “for better or worse” thing. It’s like my faith in humanity has been restored.
Keep the Weekly Awards please!! I think it probably helps people keep up with some useful information that might not be available everywhere in the country, like Ryan McMahon's hot streak. Love everything you write - thanks!
I loved your writing illness and the gift to your daughter but something is weighing on my mind. Steve Garvey is thinking of running for US Senate from California so my memories of him were brought back up. I remember him as this player for the Dodgers who claimed to be a good Christian. He had all sorts of interesting relations with women he was not married to. He evidently has been campaigning for the Hall of Fame for years. What is your take on him? (I am not interested in his politics but as a player and a person.)
I'd love to see the JoeBlogs Player, Pitcher, and Team of the week become a regular feature. One tweak, though: For those of us who have more of a rooting interest in one league over the other (say, if we happen to participate in a pure fantasy league, i.e., not mixed), it would be great to see a player, pitcher, and team selected for each league. One further thought - it seems like you could have more fun with this by putting a unique JoeBlogs spin on it - instead of choosing the best performance of the week in these categories, you could pick out the player, pitcher, and team that reached an interesting milestone or did something unusual or [Joe's brilliant idea here]. Just encouraging Joe to be Joe!
50 degrees, 30MPH winds, and rain at Fenway Saturday. Thank ghod for the pitch clock!
Congrats to you and your wife Joe! Here's to the next 25!!

Maybe he’s not worthy of a top ten mention, but I really liked the Zoreaux/Van Damme character this season. Best goalie ever!

Yes, keep up the weekly players of the week.
I don’t think it is an illness, I just think you were vaccinated with a quill pen early in life.
Lucky us!

TIA,

He does get into how Season 3 ended for several of them, mainly to say he hates it (an opinion I share).
Thanks, Tom! I need to get on the ball and catch up. I’ll re-read this essay later.

I will be curious to hear what you think of the season! Good luck with your recovery.

Here's a bit on Garvey:

Interesting. So it sounds like he developed the expected image, did not live up to it and even on the playing field did not do all he needed to do.
I can’t possibly imagine banging out a blog entry as long as yours on an iPhone. You are definitely a unique breed, and we thank you for it.
Keep the weekly awards

Congrats to Katie and good luck with the first pitch. Give ‘em the ole’ Posnanski speedball!
