I thought the problem with the artist’s rendering of the Vegas stadium was that the stands were full.

At the start of the awards season, I was all too ready to push back against Joe. I don't think it's fun or useful to have contrarian votes when the best player is clear. This is doubly true for the Hall of Fame; it may not matter whether e.g. Henry Aaron was unanimous, but it's still ridiculous that he wasn't. And, I thought, we've gotten so much better about player evaluation that naturally we're better at choosing the best player.

But Joe has convinced me that the unanimity we see today isn't just about being smarter. You could say being smarter is the reason Ohtani was unanimous: his WAR is so much higher than everyone else's, he may have been the best HITTER in the majors, before even including pitching. Maybe Ohtani was unanimous simply because he was the best, and we now have the tools to prove this beyond dissent.

On the other hand, I do not believe that Snell was the best pitcher in the NL. He was **7th*** in the NL in pitcher FWAR. Wheeler was #1 and Strider was #2, yet not a single voter ranked either Wheeler or Strider ahead of Snell. That's crazy to me. There are plenty of arguments for and against FWAR, and you've heard most of them, but a lot of very smart people decided this was the best way to look at value, and it's one of only two main approaches. [Even averaging BWAR and FWAR, Snell is behind Webb and Wheeler]

Furthermore, looking at Statcast bears this out: Snell's expected wOBA against based on balls in play is 0.300 (versus 0.266 actual), which is not even top 10 in the NL, while Strider's is 0.273 (versus 0.279 actual), which is #1 in the NL. So that's clear evidence that Snell was very lucky on batted balls, and didn't pitch as well as his ERA made it look.

This is convincing to me, and I certainly wouldn't have had Snell in my top two. It may not be to you--you may still rank Snell #1--but to have not a single voter come even close to reflecting this analysis either is evidence that all of them have a sophisticated perspective that I don't understand, or it's evidence of groupthink.
