On the Angels firing of Minasian and Arte Moreno - From a different view- An organization signs within 6-7 years, 2 of the greatest players of the last 2 decades! Not just HOF type players, HOF type players with (now) 7 MVP's! If Ohtani continues his success - possibly the GOAT of baseball!
So, as an owner, it's entirely possible that Moreno believes or thinks or wonders - How hard can finding good baseball talent be? Hence, the Angels continue their player development processes and consider it bad luck or the wrong person in charge or a poor judgement - that they haven't found other highly talented players.
I'm a happy paid subscriber, Joe, and I'm sure I speak for a lot of us (especially anyone who writes) that if it would help that JoeBlogs goes quiet for a while as you finish the book, we won't mind. Don't beat yourself up. We'll be here.
I thought he was providing entertainment for which we are paying. We don’t need to pretend that this is high art that requires patrons beyond the paying audience.
Saw Supergirl last night, and it was fine. Better than Batman v Superman, better than Man of Steel, better than Joss’s Justice League. Milly is pretty great as Supergirl, so you’ll enjoy it!
I have a Plus/Minus system for TV shows, and more specifically for cities. When I go on vacation and friends tell me "you'll love it there, it's so cool," I am usually underwhelmed. But when they say "why are you going there, that city s*cks," I find things to enjoy. I think this has more to do with my stubborn contrarian nature than with expectations, but those do play a role as well.
The problem with the Mets is really the owner's problem. According to the book BLACK EDGE, Steve Cohen owes his financial success to insider trading. Clearly he hasn't developed a network of spies in other locker rooms...yet.
From the outside, I think that the Mets are what would happen if you gave a Big Fan a few billion dollars and said, "go buy your favorite team." There doesn't seem to be any long term plan. Instead, they are just flitting from one idea to the next. The best organizations - in and out of sports - are built with a cohesive and long running plan. Of course plans need to be flexible enough to change in light of new information. But not just change for the sake of change. Cohen has certainly spent money on the team. But it feels like doing so in the way that an impatient 12 year old Strat-o-Matic owner would.
You know what this reminds me of? When George Steinbrenner decided that the way to win would be to run a lot. Turn the Bronx Bombers into the Bronx Burners and bring in Steve Kemp to lead the way.
I get that this happens, Joe, but it looks like a few pages fell out of the notebook this week. And in truth, repeating Molly Jolly a few times isn't really compensation. Didn't you think about naOhming a daughter Nancy Posnanski? (Good luck with the book, though.) I had a conversation with AI last night about a few games I saw in the early 60s. Next time pages get lost, call me. My stories would've made a good column to anyone who actually remembers the 60s. (I saw Marichal get hit while trying to bunt and had to leave a World Series game! Oh... And you require a verification code? Life in America isn't what it used to be. (OK, you knew that.)
Me thinks Steve was expecting the emptying of the notebook to mean there were a lot of items to be emptied from the notebook. Instead it just meant the items were unrelated topics that Joe didn't want to hang onto. This is topical...Steve's expectations were not met.
The Angels have finished at least 10 games out of first place for 10 straight seasons (and tracking for an 11th). If it wasn't for the shortened 2020 season (where they finished exactly 10 games out), the streak would probably be 10 straight years of 17+ games out! I guess it might be more useful to see how far a team is out of a playoff spot, then out of a division win these days. But that takes more effort.
Even the Rockies and White Sox have made the playoffs twice(!) each in the last 10 years.
Thank you for pointing out Molly Jolly, when I read it last week my first thought was this has to be a mistake. No disrespect but you just cannot have an executive in a very public role named Molly Jolly and not be ridiculed
