My dad was the Oriole scout and Assistant General Manager , Jim Russo , who signed Brooks to his first contract with the Orioles. He also signed DaveyJohnson, Boog Powell, Dave McNally and many others and recommended the trades for Frank Robinson and Mike Cuellar and many others. We referred to Brooksie as Hoover in our household. The human vacuum cleaner. He was simply the best defensive 3rd baseman to ever put on a glove. And he was one of the nicest humans I’ve ever known in my lifetime. RIP Hoover! I know that you, Frank, Earl and my dad are having a beer right now. 🧡🖤

It really says something about Joe, his writing, and the affect he's had on his readers . . .

. . . that when Brooks Robinson died . . . BROOKS ROBINSON!! . . . Mr. Third Baseman . . .

. . . the first thing that crossed my mind was "Whoa, that's Joe's Dad's favorite all-time player. Wonder how he's taking it?"

Sorry to all of us to lose a legend. But mostly to Joe's dad. Favorite players are . . . a thing, and it hurts to lose those things.
