again MLB screws it up again

with blackout rules that never end

you'll never use their app to see

your local team on ESPN

again MLB screws it up again

a beautiful ballpark around the bend

in a downtown neighborhood

replaced by a suburban deal for land

again MLB screws it up again

writers, the chance to elect, giv'n

a hitting force, a pitching prodigy

but sanctimony and math conspire against

again MLB screws it up again

a sport with funds that never end

ten billion a year: hard to comprehend

no sharing: locked out by greedy men

again MLB screws it up again

Oh man, I had a baseball book from my childhood that listed the leading home run hitters by each letter of the alphabet. The book (Red Foley's Best Baseball Book Ever) was published in 1995 so it had the stats up through the 1994 strike. It'll be fun to see how much the list has changed.

A: Henry Aaron (755)

B: Ernie Banks (512)

C: Orlando Cepeda (379)

D: Joe DiMaggio (361)

E: Darrell Evans (403)

F: Jimmie Foxx (534)

G: Lou Gehrig (493)

H: Frank Howard (382)

I: Pete Incaviglia (183)

J: Reggie Jackson (563) (for some reason the book credits him with only 530. Weird.)

K: Harmon Killebrew (573)

L: Greg Luzinski (307)

M: Willie Mays (660)

N: Graig Nettles (390)

O: Mel Ott (511) (of course my 10-year-old self wrote in Sadaharu Oh [838] underneath)

P: Tony Perez (377)

Q: Jamie Quirk (40)

R: Babe Ruth (714)

S: Mike Schmidt (548)

T: Frank Thomas (286) (That's 1960s outfielder Frank Thomas, as HoF Frank Thomas had only 142 home runs)

U: Willie Upshaw (88)

V: Mickey Vernon (172)

W: Ted Williams (521)

Y: Carl Yastrzemski (452)

Z: Gus Zernial (237)

So between the 25 players, 10 have managed to hold on to the record through over 27 years of onslaught (Aaron, Foxx, Howard, Jackson, Killebrew, Mays, Nettles, Ruth, Williams, Yaz). Which is as many ballparks that are still in use between 1994 and today. Still, some of the names that have lost their lead are super fun to look back on: Baby Bull, Gary the Bull, Willie Upshaw, Mickey V, Ozark Ike Gus Zernial!
