I understand the complaints about this being a lightweight (ha-ha) entry but, "It's a hundred floors of frights, they're not all gonna be winners."

Grayson Rodriguez is listed as "Phillies" not "Orioles" in the game FYI.

That was the most useless post I have ever read. All self-promotion, no substance.

I am re-thinking my subscription based on this post alone but there have been others. It was one thing with the run-up to the baseball book, re the scheduling. fine.

Would JP write about weight loss in SI? A newspaper column? The sports substance is good, why I subscribe.

I wonder if I need to pay to help someone overcome his insecurities.

I hope Joe reads some of these negative posts. The best player in baseball "game" is neither fun nor addictive, it's tedious. Lose the AI -- and if you're going to promote something, include at least some original content. I don't mind the personal stuff like the weight loss (congrats), but stuff like that has to be a throw-in to something with substance.

BIG congrats on the weight loss!

while the 'best player' game sounds fun, i will not partcipate in something that uses AI explainers!

forgive my chronically late comments recently, have only been online 1 hr or so in the mornings!

Congratulations on the new silhouette.

Congratulations on the weight loss, and for what it likely means for your overall health. I recall you sharing a bit about your bother's journey, some years ago, and I hope he's doing well too.

As for the new player project, the AI component keeps me from having as much interest as I otherwise might. I imagine I'll still read the results when you put everything together, but I'm not going to vote. I'm not sure if you were paid to include it, or just have different feelings about this sort of AI, but I'd far prefer you just trusted that your readers know how to research players if they want something more than their gut reaction to a choice between two players.

You don't have to hit the explain button. It just gives you 2 choices without explanation and you pick one.

Jason Lukehart's avatar

Yeah, I understand that, but Joe talking up the AI option just sort of put me off the process entirely.

Big congrats on the weight loss.

Also, if you like, I'll volunteer to be your fountain pen sheriff at the DC show. Meaning, I'll hold your credit card and keep you from spending more than your and Margo's preset limit of $xx,xxx.xx on new pens.

where the photos at? ah, guess i'll trust you and say congratulations, most sincerely. a lot of people who have not struggled with their weight have no idea how hard it is to do what you've done. very happy for you, as with all your other successes.

I unfortunately feel obliged to join the chorus of comments unhappy that you used some “AI” computer program for this. These programs exist to steal the labor of writers, and consume far too much energy. I would certainly not expect you to write a blurb on every player nor to hire someone to do so, so it is an excusable use of such a program in the labor sense, but the energy usage this requires concerns me. I think a link to each player’s Fangraphs and/or B-R page(s) would suffice to fill the role of these “AI” blurbs in a more sustainable way, and I hope you’ll consider changing it to that.

If it isn’t changed, I’d suggest to my fellow readers that we not engage with the “AI” blurb option. It may not always be as accurate or unbiased as we’d like, and it uses a truly absurd amount of power to operate. I’m sure most of us are smart enough to have our own opinions on most of these comparatives anyway, which of course is why it will be interesting data.

I can honestly say I never gave a moment’s thought to how much energy AI consumes, but it’s something to think about. Thanks for planting that seed…

Congrats on the weight loss! What are you doing different that's helping the weight loss? Asking for a friend...

😂

I’m very happy that you’re feeling good about your physical shape these days, and congratulations!

Not so happy about AI promotion but whatever, reprint your scraped and stolen thoughts and words if you like I suppose. The history of the written word is basically humans doing that anyway.

Joe - if I pre-order the book online, is there a preferred website for doing so?

Fun game. Even beyond the objections to AI, I didn’t find the couple write ups I looked at useful. Each guy has some strengths and weaknesses; yeh, I know that which is why I wanted help. I don’t need AI to compare Mookie Betts to Justin Turner.

I did 120. Guessing from the names I saw, there must be close to 250 players on the list. A lot of “not too 200” names came up for me.

I changed my diet and did a lot of walking during the first year of the pandemic, being jobless and all. Dropped about twenty pounds in about six weeks. When restaurants reopened a lot of peeps said I looked a lot thinner. I never saw it in the mirror, day to day, but I guess others see you in a different way. And all of them meant it well. I definitely had a weight issue that I’m not sure would have been addressed if Covid didn’t make us all stay home, etc.

Congratulations on your improving health! Keep after it!

Having also recently lost 60 pounds the best thing is looking at the pile of clothes that are now significantly too big and going "well, guess I can't wear THOSE anymore."

KHAZAD's avatar

The need to purchase so many new clothes is something I didn't anticipate. (Not as much weight, but the percentage may be similar as I am 5'4") I am still scared to send them to charity yet, but I have boxes ready to go, including now useless belts.
